This trendy DC spot has been on my radar for years. I finally had the opportunity to go last week and had high expectations for this place.
This spot is very, very casual. It is called “unconventional” because they are open from morning to evening (like a diner) but the food they serve isn’t the typical diner food. The menu isn’t large but all of the options are unique. So honestly, it is just a restaurant. By those standards, any restaurant that serves breakfast can claim to be an “unconventional” diner.
Truthfully I was initially taken aback on how casual this restaurant is. The lighting is also really bright so I felt like I was under the spotlight with little privacy between tables. The restaurant felt very touristy, which doesn’t make the food bad, it just isn’t the vibe I want eating in DC anymore.
We all ordered different things from the menu and the food was tasty (or “yummy” as one might say). The Pot Pie Poppers were a great starter. My Cubana bowl was good but they mixed in olives and it made the entire dish taste like olives.
Our server was very nice and attentive. The only negative moment was when my friends ordered drinks and the server returned with the wrong drinks twice. I don’t think I will go back for dinner here but I think that their vibe is much better for a brunch scene (and there brunch menu looks great too).
Located in the Shaw neighborhood DC next to a lot of other trendy spots and a metro close by!
