Agora, meaning marketplace in Greek, is truly one of the best Mediterranean restaurants I have ever been to. As you probably know by now, I really like Mediterranean food. Despite its name, Agora, it is not a marketplace. Rather, it is a fun and lively restaurant. Everything we had was incredibly fresh, presented perfectly and well balanced. I felt so healthy eating all of this food and could not stop reaching for more. Everything on their menu is meant to share which is the superior way to eat dinner. Enough with personal portions, we should never limit ourselves to one plate per meal. If you do make your way to Agora (make reservations in advance) and please try the following items:
Sagnaki
Octopus
Kasik Salad
Mushroom and Cauliflower Salad
We got more than this, obviously, but if you have no idea what to order this can be a good start. My only problem with the restaurant was with the complimentary bread. The bread came out hot and soft, but literally after two minutes it was cold and stale. I wasn’t sure if they were just microwaving old bread because it got REALLY stale very quickly. Other than that, the food was fire. The cocktails we ordered were also very delicious but of course is an extra $12 worth it for a drink? If you make more money than me, it probably is worth it, but I have gone out enough to realize that I could save a lot of money if I just skip the fancy cocktails.
There was nothing particularly incredible about the service. Everyone was nice but since the food is taken out as soon as its ready, your waiter/waitress/waitrex probably won’t be serving it to you. Again, I don’t really care about the service. Honestly the less interaction the better with servers, as I am sure you are also like me and cannot continue a conversation when the server comes along to pour some water. I am also sure that you have extremely socially awkward friends who cannot for the life of them order something without messing up and embarrassing everyone at the table.
Location is on the beautiful 17th street close to Dupont. This is an incredible area of DC and is filled with so many restaurants. I highly recommend taking the metro since it is close to the red line and the walk from there is quite lovely.
